Poem In Your Pocket Day

poem on a tree
For more information about Poem In Your Pocket, go to Poets.org This poem is from one of my favorite poet, Emily Dickinson. I think this is the first poem that I ever read which introduced me to poetry. I didn't quite understand it when I first read it but the first line had always stayed with me. There seem to be more than one version of this poem but I like this version the best. Here's the poem:

I'm Nobody!
by Emily Dickinson

I’m nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us — don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.

How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!

I like this and the photo you chose to go along with the poem in your pocket day. Though I disagree that Emily Dickinson was a nobody. Clearly she was admired by many. The images she sets forth in this poem are strong. I just hope anyone reading this will see they are worthy instead of not. Thanks for the comment on my poem. Have a nice night.

I love the Belle of Amherst! This is so like her--self-effacing despite her genius. Thanks for sharing.

I think this was one of my earliest experiences with poetry as a child … and it’s one of the poems I used to have posted in my elementary school classroom to evoke conversation about poetry and perceptions of self (and others). Thanks for the memories ;--)
Hugs and blessings,

This is the one of the first poems by her that really caught my eye. It's a great choice.

You know, I'm almost afraid to admit it, but I don't think I've ever read this one. Love it though.
